Whales, History and Wine - Experience the Best of Hermanus

Just 12 minutes away from Brown Jug is the Old Harbour Museum. The museum’s indoor display feature items from the town’s early fishing industry, the  ‘Selkirk Collection’ (named after famous Selkirk, Angler and Shark Catcher who lived in the town) and aquarium displays about southern right whales. The outdoor part of the museum has a variety of old fishing boats.

Hermanus is known for being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. From our guesthouse, you can make your way to Walker Bay where you can search for whales along the coastline. Windsor Bay, Kwaaiwater Siever's Point, all located under 30 minutes away from us, are also popular land-based whale watching spots. Alternatively, you could book boat-based whale-watching tours at the nearby tour operators. 

Approximately an hour away from our establishment, is Gansbaai, the shark cage divers’ paradise. With a wide variety of tours, the town is home to a number white shark cage diving experts, allowing you to get close to the sea predators.

Seven minutes away from Brown Jug, on the R320, is the Whalehaven Winery which marks the beginning of the Hemel en Aarde Wine Valley. The area also known as the Hermanus Wine Route is home to some of the finest wines in the world.  Visit this area to learn about wine from the top connoisseurs.
